Guest Post – I Don’t Put Money in the Bank

I don’t put money in the bank

I haven’t got any to spare

I’ve asked officials for some more

But they don’t want to know or care.

I don’t put money in the bank

I don’t pay rent on time,

The items of of furniture in my home

As yet, they are not mine.

I don’t money in the bank

I’m always late with bills,

They say I should have work by now

But I have got no skills.

Prompt Four: A Band

Laura was lost in the music. Will watched her with a smile on his face. He wanted to remember this moment, the one moment that he could look back on and tell his children of a moment where he felt as though he belonged. Felt significant.

He had his arm draped over her shoulders, her soft brown curls hanging over his forearm. Her eyes were alive, bright, her smile enormous. She didn’t blink as though if she did the spell would be broken. The music was so loud he felt the drums in Laura, the bass in his chest, the vibrations in the air making his clothes shake and his skin tingle.

The singer crooned into the microphone, but it was so loud Will could only hear odd words. He could feel rather than hear Laura singing along to the song that had been playing in her car for weeks.

For this one moment, despite the music, despite the masses of sweaty people bopping and jumping in time with the music, Will felt very peaceful, like he had had an awakening of some despcription. He wasn’t dancing and neither was Laura, she was simply tapping her foot to the beat of the drum and nodding her head. It seemed to Will that Laura was in such a state of awe she wasn’t able to move.

He looked around once more, looking at the singer, the guitarist, bassist and drummer. He noted what they were wearing. He looked at the crowd, some were laughing, some were dancing, some kissing and some doing other things but he pretended not to see those. He looked at Laura and was instantly struck by her beauty. She had never looked so beautiful, never so carefree. He took a picture of her in his head.

For this moment, was the moment where his life began.

Pillow Talk

Lucy rolled over, her red hair spilling out over the pillow, almost like a halo. Her hands came together in a prayer position and slipped under her cheek. Her eyes fluttered open and her brown eyes were met with dark blue.

Dan had been watching her for a while. Still not quite believing she was real, and here in his bed. He smiled and leaned over and kissed her, holding his breath so he didn’t poison her with his morning breath. Her one hand came away from her face and interlocked her fingers with his. Dan rolled onto his back and Lucy smiled and repositioned herself, placing a hand on his chest and resting her chin on her hand so she could look at him. He ran his free hand over her hair, she closed her eyes in contentedness rather than being tired.

“Hopes?” She asked.

“To be financially stable. With my career that’s a pretty big hope.”

“Oh yeah, we’ll you aren’t called struggling artists for nothing,” she grinned, pushing herself up and kissing him.

“Oh you know, the usual,” she grinned. “Marry a prince and become a princess.”

He laughed.

“Plans for the next week?” He said.

“Never leaving this bed,” she said, hugging the duvet close to her. “You?”

“Try and not starve,” he winked.

“Stay in here with me. We’ll build a fort and live here and never leave,” she murmured. She was smiling genuinely.

“Don’t tempt me,” he laughed, kissing her hair.

“Why don’t you paint me? I’m sure I would earn you a lot of money, what with my impossible beauty,” she said, leaning up and tossing her red hair over her shoulder.

“I’m sure you would,” he said. “But I don’t think I could quite capture it. Besides, you’re not French.”

“Nice save,” she said slyly. “Favourite thing about me?”

“I quite like your face,” he said.

“That’s good, as it’s on show quite a bit,” she laughed. “I quite like your nose. It’s very roman.”

Dan laughed again, harder this time.

“Thanks, I think.”

She grinned. Her smile was large and infectious, although it wasn’t so big that he feared her face was split. It was almost like her face stretched to accommodate it, yet let it shine. He leaned his head toward her and kissed her lips softly. She laughed and quickly repositioned herself so she was sat on his hips. Her face hovered above his, her cute cutting nose touching the top of his roman one, her hair creating a red curtain around them. Her smile was small now, but still beautiful. Her eyes sparkled.

Prompt Three: An Alien

Sarah heard a noise. It wasn’t a noise she had heard before. The sleepiness still invading her mind, she fought to return to her dream, but the annoying beeping was right in her ear.

“George!” she groaned. “Get out of my room!”

“Yowzah!” someone shouted, as a door swung open and made a huge bang. Sarah’s eyes wrenched open. There looking at her was a bright-eyed man. Out of the corner of her eye, behind him she saw a bright blue thing. The man was grinning at her.

“Hello!” He cried with enthusiasm. “You’re Sarah Graham, yes?”

“Yes… How do you know my name?” she said, but just as he opened his mouth to answer her, she overrode him. “Actually a more important question would be,” she started. “How did you get into my room?”

“The TARDIS,” The man said simply. “The answer to both of your questions I’ve actually been here before, but you were much older then.”

Sarah’s head hurt.

“So you know me, when I’m older, but you’re younger… Are you Benjamin Button or something?”

“No,” The man replied “Though Benjamin Button is a work of fiction, the condition which he suffers, Ageus Reversus, does infact exist, though I do not suffer from it. I am a timelord from the planet Galifrey, and this thing here,” he gestured behind him to the blue thing which she now noticed was a Police box, “is a my time machine which I travel through time and space in.” The man had said all of this in under a ten seconds and Sarah took a moment to process it.

“So you’re not human?”

“Goodness no!” he replied. “But you humans are marellous creatures. Survivors. That’s what you are.”

“And what did you say that thing was?”  Sarah asked, pointing to the box.

“My TARDIS. Time and Relative Dimension in Space,” he said proudly. “It can take you anywhere in time and space.”

“Anywhere?” Sarah asked, sceptically.

“Sarah Graham, I’m the Doctor,” he said, holding out his hand. “Would you like to go on an adventure.”

A.N As much as I Love Doctor Who. I do not own him. I know this shouldn’t really count as a short story, but I couldn’t really pass up an opportunity when the prompt was Alien. Anyway I hope you enjoyed the story 🙂

Prompt 1: An Apartment

Your character moves into a new apartment. On the surface, the place seemed ideal, but his/her first night there, your character discovers a terrible problem with the place that s/he didn’t take into account…

Closing the door behind my mother as she left. I leaned against the wooden door and looked around. I took in my brand new home. Everything was brown. The floor was an orangey brown with the floorboards. The doors were a sandy brown with the wood, and the walls matched the floor. I was tempted to look out of the window and see brown and sure enough there was a tree right outside.

But it was my home. My first home. And I was so excited. I looked around, just to make sure I was alone, and then ran around the room, skidding on the laminate flooring like I did when I was a kid. Grinning like a Cheshire Cat, I ran from room to room, checking it all out. When I reached the living room, I fell backwards onto the sofa laughed giddily to myself. I sat there for a moment and then decided I would watch my first movie in my home. Alone. Oohoo.

“Yes,” I said. “Mum I’m absolutely fine. Honestly!”

“Are you sure? This is your first night, are you sure you don’t want me to come round?”

“I’m fine. Please, I want to stay here on my own. I will have to stay here eventually.”

“Alright then.”

Suddenly I woke up. My heart thudding. I look around, I couldn’t see anything, but something was making a noise. I got up, wrapping my dressing gown around myself and walked from room to room, checking out everything. I went back into the bedroom and looked around.

I thought I saw something out the corner of my eye. I wrapped my gown tighter around myself and made another trip around the flat. I definitely saw something.

I whirled around.

And jumped out of my skin.

There, staring at me through the window, were the two large amber eyes of a barn owl.

“Hoohoo!” it screeched through the glass. So that was what woke me up, that horrible sound. I double checked the window and yes, they were closed. But of course, because of the price, single glazing. The sound came through the window as if it were paper.

I sighed a breath of relief, at least it wasn’t someone trying to jump in my room. My heart was still pounding, but I would have to try and go back to sleep, I would have to be getting up in five hours. I pulled back the covers to the bed and got back in. Pulling the duvet over myself and snuggling up to get warm and comfortable.

I rolled my eyes, rolled over and put the radio on quietly.

It was going to be a long night.
